Surroundings
From
the campsite you can discover the beauty of this ‘Rivers’
area – the area around the Rhine, Waal and Meuse –
on foot or by bicycle, across dikes, along rivers and through
little villages. You’ll pass flood plains, orchards, farms,
nature conservation areas including Gelderse Poort and Klompenwaard,
Fort Pannerden, and Doornenburg Castle from the middle ages. Pause
along the way to listen to the birds or view the wild horses as
they gallop past.
De Waay Campsite is located in the village of Doornenburg, where
the Waal splits from the Rhine and the River Linge rises.
In
the reception area free walking and cycling routes await you to
make it easy for you to explore the surroundings. So don’t
forget your bike and walking shoes!
There’s also plenty to discover in the nearby cities of
Arnhem and Nijmegen.
Arnhem with its bustling city centre where you can go shopping
and enjoy a drink in the corn market. For art lovers there is
the Kröller-Müller Museum. Pay a visit too to Burgers
Zoo and of course the open-air museum.
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, and you can see
that from its beautiful historic buildings. Not to be missed is
the Waalkade, a pleasant place to eat or enjoy a drink. For the
children it’s great fun to cross the Waal on the Pancake
Boat, eating as many pancakes as you like en route!
